Tetanus is a disease caused by infection of wounds. Tetanus usually associated with wounds caused by sharp objects that rust. Not only adults, infants also have a high enough risk of tetanus affected, especially in the birth process. Tetanus is a disease that quickly developed into fatal.Tetanus is a dangerous infection that affects the nervous system and muscles. Tetanus occurs because of injuries on the body such as a nail punctured wounds, broken glass or cans, dirty wounds, and the baby’s umbilical cord can pass through. In newborns, these germs can enter through cuts the umbilical cord was not cut with a sterile knife.
The main cause of tetanus is an infection caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani toxin. Tetanus germs can form spores that remain alive when boiled, but easy to die if heated or exposed to abstergent pests. In fact, sometimes the bacteria are also found in human feces. Therefore, the infection of this disease in general is that the wound area, and air untouched.
Spores of Clostridium tetani can live for many years and can survive in very high temperatures. Contained in soil, animal feces, dust, and manure. If the tetanus germs enter the human body to an infection. This germ produces a poison causes paralysis of muscles tetanospasmin whole body is rigid. Bacteria can enter the human body through the skin damage such as scratches, puncture or abrasion injuries. Examples are often found is the result of nail scratched. It could also be due to the IV needle, insect bites, and burns.
Symptoms
Symptoms that arise in the first place is headache, anxiety, pain in jaw muscles are then followed by stiffness (trismus), fever, abdominal muscles tighten, seizures, and eventually the entire body. According to Dr. Ralph symptoms of tetanus usually appear within 7-14 days after infection. But it can also occur within 2 days or 50 days after infection.
The most common symptom is stiffness in the jaw so the patient can not open his mouth and swallowed. Other symptoms of anxiety, headaches, fever, sore throat, chills, muscle spasms arms and legs. Facial muscle spasms causing the patient look like a grinning with his eyebrows raised. Stiffness or spasms in the muscles of the abdomen, neck, and back can cause the patient’s head and heels pulled back, while his body bent forward. Sphincter muscle spasms in the lower abdomen will cause constipation and urine retention.
During a seizure in the whole body, the patient can not speak because the rigid chest muscles or spasms of the throat occurs. This is causing respiratory problems, so people will be starved of oxygen. Tetanus is generally limited to a group of muscles around the wound. Spasms around the wound may persist for several weeks.
Tetanus is not contagious disease. Tetanus can only occur if the bacteria transformed into the vegetative form of the human body. This disease, if the recovery does not leave disabled. However, in severe tetanus death rate 80-90 percent. Once cured, must be given a full vaccination for tetanus infection does not provide immunity against subsequent infection.
